June 30 Acreage Report

by ND Wheat

Posted on 6/30/2010

The USDA June 30 Acreage report pegged total U.S. hard red spring wheat acreage at 13.3 million, up 5 percent from 2009 and unchanged from the March report. Total durum acreage is estimated at 2.675, up 5 percent from 2009 and higher than the March estimate of 2.223 million acres. A higher durum loan rate is the primary reason for the increased durum acreage. Both the spring wheat and durum wheat acreage estimates were higher than expected. Total U.S. wheat acreage is slightly higher than the March estimate at 54.305 million acres.

Specifically for North Dakota, total wheat acreage is pegged at 8.84 million acres, up 300,000 from the March report and higher than the 8.68 million acres planted in 2009. North Dakota is expected to have the highest wheat planted acreage in the U.S. Winter wheat acres remain the same as previous reports at 340,000. Spring wheat acres are estimated at 6.7 million, 4 percent higher than 2009. Durum acres in North Dakota are projected 300,000 higher than the previous estimate at 1.8 million; this is a 9 percent increase on the year. Durum acreage is up due to the higher loan rate and good moisture conditions. The report shows estimates as of June 1, when some producers were still planting spring wheat and durum, therefore it is likely not all intended acreage got planted. Corn, soybean, barley and sunflower acreage numbers dropped from the March report, while wheat and canola increased.
